Advaita vs. Vaishnava Vedanta: A Comprehensive Analysis

Summary

The Bhakti Sangha server has launched a comprehensive, fact-based series titled Māyāvāda-khaṇḍanam. This resource provides a scholarly Pūrva-pakṣa and Siddhānta analysis comparing Advaita and Vaishnava Vedānta. It covers essential theological topics, including the nature of Brahman, the identity of the Jīva, and the philosophical implications of Avidyā and Māyā, serving as a vital study guide for the community.

Hare Kṛṣṇa!!

This is going to be a comprehensive list of arguments against Advaita. No polemics, just facts.

Me and all volunteers will keep updating this!
Originally my list of pramanas lacked formal language so here's ChatGPT rewording it all:

Advaita Vedānta and Vaiṣṇava Vedānta

A Śāstric Pūrva-pakṣa and Siddhānta

1. Nature of Brahman

Pūrva-pakṣa (Advaita Vedānta)

Brahman is one, without a second (ekam eva advitīyam, Chāndogya Upaniṣad 6.2.1). All distinctions of form, quality, and activity belong to the realm of avidyā. The Supreme Reality is nirguṇa, devoid of attributes. Scriptural descriptions of Brahman as possessing form or qualities are provisional (aupādhika), intended for meditation (upāsanā) by those not yet fit for the knowledge of non-duality. Ultimate liberation consists in the realization that all perceived difference is false.

Siddhānta (Vaiṣṇava Vedānta)

The absence of material qualities does not entail the absence of all qualities. The Upaniṣads repeatedly affirm Brahman as conscious and supreme among conscious beings:

nityo nityānāṁ cetanaś cetanānām
(Kaṭha Upaniṣad 2.2.13)

Brahman is therefore not indeterminate consciousness but the supreme conscious person. Attributes such as knowledge, bliss, and lordship do not limit Brahman but express His infinitude. The Śruti does not negate qualities as such; it negates material limitation. Hence, the personal Brahman (Bhagavān) is the highest reality.

2. Identity of the Jīva

Pūrva-pakṣa

The individual self is Brahman itself, appearing limited due to ignorance. When ignorance is destroyed by knowledge, the distinction between jīva and Brahman is sublated, just as the imagined snake disappears upon recognition of the rope.

3. The Problem of Avidyā and Māyā

Pūrva-pakṣa

Avidyā is beginningless and indescribable (anirvacanīyā). Though Brahman is pure, it appears conditioned due to superimposition, as the sun appears reflected and distorted in water.

Siddhānta

If ignorance truly affects Brahman, Brahman ceases to be omniscient. If ignorance affects only the jīva, then identity between jīva and Brahman cannot be maintained. Śruti declares:

satyam jñānam anantam brahma
(Taittirīya Upaniṣad 2.1.1)

That which is knowledge itself cannot be covered by ignorance. Māyā, therefore, is a real energy of the Lord that binds the finite soul, not the Absolute.

4. Reality of the World

Pūrva-pakṣa

The world is mithyā, neither absolutely real nor absolutely unreal. It is negated upon the realization of Brahman, just as dream objects vanish upon waking.

Siddhānta

Śruti and Smṛti consistently affirm the reality of creation as dependent upon Brahman:

yato vā imāni bhūtāni jāyante
(Taittirīya Upaniṣad 3.1.1)

That which proceeds from the real cannot be ultimately unreal. The world is real but contingent (paratantra-satya). Denying its reality undermines dharma, karma, and divine purpose.

5. Nature of Liberation (Mokṣa)

Pūrva-pakṣa

Liberation consists in the cessation of all duality and activity through knowledge of non-difference. Bliss is undifferentiated being (nirviśeṣa-ānanda).

Siddhānta

Liberation is described positively in scripture as conscious participation in divine presence:

tam eva viditvā ati mṛtyum eti
(Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad 3.8)

Knowing the Lord implies an object of knowledge distinct from the knower. The Bhāgavata Purāṇa defines liberation not as dissolution, but as reinstatement in one’s own constitutional position:

muktir hitvānyathā rūpaṁ svarūpeṇa vyavasthitiḥ
(Bhāg. 2.10.6)

6. Status of Bhakti

Pūrva-pakṣa

Bhakti is a preparatory discipline that purifies the mind and leads to jñāna, after which it is abandoned.

Siddhānta

Scripture establishes bhakti as both means and end:

bhaktyā mām abhijānāti yāvān yaś cāsmi tattvataḥ
(Bhagavad Gītā 18.55)

If devotion were provisional, it would not be eternal. Love of God cannot be negated without negating the very purpose of liberation.

7. Stability of Liberation

Pūrva-pakṣa

Knowledge once attained is irreversible.

Siddhānta

The Bhāgavata Purāṇa warns against liberation devoid of devotion:

ye ’nye ’ravindākṣa vimukta-māninaḥ… patanty adhaḥ
(Bhāg. 10.2.32)

Knowledge unsupported by loving service lacks permanence.

Final Siddhānta

Non-duality is affirmed, but not at the cost of consciousness, individuality, or love. The Absolute is one, yet eternally possessed of form, qualities, and energies. Liberation is not the erasure of the self, but its eternal fulfillment in loving service to Bhagavān.

Bonus Explanation By Śrīla Prabhupāda on the Distinction

happyumber-69 OP

Bg. 7.5

अपरेयमितस्त्वन्यां प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम् ।
जीवभूतां महाबाहो ययेदं धार्यते जगत् ॥ ५ ॥

...Energies are always controlled by the energetic, and therefore the living entities are always controlled by the Lord – they have no independent existence. They are never equally powerful, as unintelligent men think. The distinction between the living entities and the Lord is described in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.87.30) as follows:

aparimitā dhruvās tanu-bhṛto yadi sarva-gatās
tarhi na śāsyateti niyamo dhruva netarathā
ajani ca yan-mayaṁ tad avimucya niyantṛ bhavet
samam anujānatāṁ yad amataṁ mata-duṣṭatayā

“O Supreme Eternal! If the embodied living entities were eternal and all-pervading like You, then they would not be under Your control. But if the living entities are accepted as minute energies of Your Lordship, then they are at once subject to Your supreme control. Therefore real liberation entails surrender by the living entities to Your control, and that surrender will make them happy. In that constitutional position only can they be controllers. Therefore, men with limited knowledge who advocate the monistic theory that God and the living entities are equal in all respects are actually guided by a faulty and polluted opinion.”

The Supreme Lord, Kṛṣṇa, is the only controller, and all living entities are controlled by Him. These living entities are His superior energy because the quality of their existence is one and the same with the Supreme, but they are never equal to the Lord in quantity of power. While exploiting the gross and subtle inferior energy (matter), the superior energy (the living entity) forgets his real spiritual mind and intelligence. This forgetfulness is due to the influence of matter upon the living entity. But when the living entity becomes free from the influence of the illusory material energy, he attains the stage called mukti, or liberation. (...)

Śrīla Śrīdhara Svāmī prays:

antar-yantā sarva-lokasya gītaḥ
śrutyā yuktyā caivam evāvaseyaḥ
yaḥ sarva-jñaḥ sarva-śaktir nṛṣiṁhaḥ
śrīmantaṁ taṁ cetasaivāvalambe

“In my heart I take shelter of Him who is glorified as the inner controller of all the worlds, and whom the Vedas ascertain in truth through logical reasoning. He is Nṛsiṁha, the omniscient and omnipotent Lord of the goddess of fortune.”
