It can be the main factor. Of the main shortlisting criteria, but when it becomes the only factor, the students at school level focus on only the exam and the overall development of the students are affected.

Arghhh, colleges shiuld use other factors to. Or maybe merit based on other areas also, writing skills etc. Not just streamlined exams of specific topics.
At a school level, if there are only one exam based entrances to colleges, people stop trying to learn other things in a deeper level. Overall personality development is hindered and the other fields where such exams do not exist also fade a little.
I mean, yeah educational institutions should do better, and add more activities in their curriculum.
But if it ends up with one exam only leading to entrance to institutes, it just affects the popularity and knowledge and skills related to other fields

u r assuming exams are the cause..students dont ignore other skills because of merit..they ignore them because schools dont value them enough..the solution is to improve the education system, not make admissions less merit based

lowk u r blaming the admissions process for a problem created by the school system...if schools only prepare students for one exam, thts a curriculum issue and not a merit issue..changing admissions wont suddenly make students interested in other fields..better education will

Problem is at all levels. Curriculum issue is def fked up on its own
ima agree the education system should improve at every level...but that doesnt mean admissions should stop being merit based...we can fix schools while still rewarding the most qualified applicants..those arent opposing ideas

My bad, merit in general can have 2-3 prongs, and thats I think the perfect criteria for this
