Summary
The Pokémon Champions | VGC Battles & Tournaments server features a community discussion on a unique Greninja dual weather team build. Members analyze the viability of avoiding traditional speed control like Tailwind or Trick Room, while debating optimal movesets for Rillaboom and potential weather setter alternatives like Politoed or Alolan Ninetales. This thread provides valuable insights into creative competitive team building and strategic decision-making for the current VGC season.
Hey everyone, this is my first team I’m actually building after using and learning Perish trap for the whole season. Lmk what you guys think and any advice. I’ve been really liking the idea of Greninja being able to change its type twice in a row depending on what’s needed. I do not like using screens and tailwind/tr at all

Why don’t you like tailwind? Just curious as that seems like it could just be kinda useful on the team here.
Also do you have a specific match up in mind when giving Rillaboom drain punch?
I didn't expect to see a pelliper without arch
Unfortunately I hate playing with tailwind and trick room as much as it might nerf me, and for drain punch it’s me having to test it if it’s actually worth it with life orb and grassy terrain together if not high horsepower would be put in that slot
I was considering Politoed for the icy wind support but I thought hurricane would be best for things like Sneasler
I was also considering to go Ttar scarfed
Yh like after a wood hammer or them damaging rillaboom since he is quite slow
So it was just for extra durability in the hp regain aspect but I might just not need it and use high horsepower
I think I agree. High horsepower would work better.
Personally I’d even like Grassy Glide better for the priority and ability to take out no bulk Basc but that’s me.
Drain punch could work, but you could also just run Super Power on Ttar for fighting coverage.
You could swap Peli out for the toad, icy wind would give you some form of speed control and the high horsepower or Metagross can deal with Sneasler
Conversely you could swap out the Peli for Alolan Ninetails and swap Ice Beam on Greninja for Blizzard.
Ninetails can also support you with weather, Icy Wind but you’d also get Aurora Veil. Just would need to be careful (like you are already needing to do) to not fight your own weather.
Should I move the LO on Gholdengo and maybe grassy seed or miracle seed on Rillaboom
All in all I don’t think the team looks bad tho
If you want Rilla to be a more attack heavy build then go with the miracle seed. Does crazy damage
I didn’t include grassy glide in case of me using MMetagross steel roller to not overlap and then just have a low dmg move with no priority
I might give toed a try then because yh you lot are right Metagross can deal with Sneasler pretty easily
Grassy Glide would still go off before Steel Roller and then you can just cycle Rilla out to reset the terrain and your ability to click steel roller again
But it isn’t really needed. Just something I noticed lol
Also Ttar scarfed to outspeed Raichu maybe?
Tbf yh I could also remove protect for u-turn in that case as well maybe or just hard switch
Max speed, Jolly nature Ttar is getting 186 speed
It would outspeed low speed investment Riachu but not mega Y at all
Wait what it shows me max speed investment 202 whilst yaichu 200
Oh nvm that was mega Ttar my bad
I was about to ask for screenshots of your sonic level Ttar lol
Also was thinking MGren on +26 to also outspeed MLopunny just in case of the matchup and I’m locked onto rock type with weather ball?
Mmm I mean it’s only 5 over of what I would need for yaichu
But yh I guess I could use those 5 points for something else
Ice beam should ohko mence if I’m not wrong
Ladder can be funky sometimes but best rule of thumb is to build for whats common and you can play around what isn’t
Weather ball rock type ohko’s ZardY even tho I haven’t seen him at all during the whole season
Ice Shard from M.Baxcaliber comes close to killing it so Ice Beam should definitely pick it up
Even with no SpA investment and just stab?
Because weather ball does that to ZardY with no investment at all on Greninja and Zard being full bulk
Ohhh yh I didn’t notice that thank you
No investment into SpA on Greninja, Ice Beam on M.Salamence will do 167% minimum it looks like
0 SpA Protean Greninja-Mega Ice Beam vs. 2 HP / 0 SpD Salamence-Mega: 288-340 (167.4 - 197.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Even if you are somehow facing against a max special bulk mega mence it’ll kill it with no investment
0 SpA Protean Greninja-Mega Ice Beam vs. 2 HP / 32 SpD Salamence-Mega: 220-264 (127.9 - 153.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Damnn that’s nice
And then for Dnite I just need a fake out to proc multiscale
Correct. I didn’t run the calca for that but it should be similar enough. I think Dnite is a little bulkier but I could be wrong
Cool thank you both for the help🙏🏻
Let us know how testing goes!
Will doo!!
